A tucked away pizza restaurant on an industrial estate in Cornwall is up for the title of Britain’s Best Takeaway on a new BBC TV series. The father and daughter team behind Pizza Cabina travelled to Manchester to battle it out against three other pizza takeaways on the new programme which is presented by DJ Sara Cox and comedian Darren Harriott.
The new eight-part series, which starts on May 9, sees some of the nation’s best-loved independent takeaways battling for supremacy in a fast-food showdown that crowns a different winner each week. Each order is biked to households in and around Manchester for the ultimate customer critique, before the scores reveal each episode’s Top Takeaway.
Flying the flag for Cornish takeaways is the Pizza Cabina, which is based on Threemilestone Industrial Estate near Truro. Father and daughter team Jono and Anya Knight wanted “the good food of Cornwall to go out to the good people of Manchester”.

The Truro takeaway was contacted by TV production company Ricochet to apply for the series. After going through the application process, including filming interviews, Jono and Anya were chosen to compete against three other pizza restaurants from other parts of the country and filming took place last summer.
Each episode of the series will feature a different takeaway, from fish and chips to kebabs and curries. Jono said: “It was really exciting and terrifying in equal measure. There was a pop-up kitchen in the studio and we had to prepare pizzas to be delivered by a fleet of mopeds to families in Manchester, who judged the food.”
Pizza Cabina cooked special Cornish crab and lobster pizzas alongside one of their bestsellers back in Cornwall, the Banger – wood-fired sausage, Cornish chilli, wood-fired peppers and mozzarella. “The series is a celebration of the nation’s top takeaways who rescued us all during lockdown,” added Jono. “Being on the programme has been an unexpected bonus for us – we’re an honest, family-run business which uses local produce and we think we produce the best pizzas in Cornwall.”
Presenter Darren, who has appeared on numerous TV panel shows including Live at the Apollo, 8 out of 10 Cats and The Last Leg, said: “If there’s two things I love it’s takeaways and families, except at around 3pm on Christmas Day with all the relatives fighting over the remote control and that’s when I’ll be dreaming of ordering in a meal for one. Working on such a unique, fun show with the legendary Sara Cox and getting to know all the families was a personal highlight, I can’t wait for everyone at home to meet them.”
Pizza Cabina has this week opened a new venture next door to its premises – Café Cabina features Origin Coffee and lunchtime treats including Calzone Pizza Pasties.
