BBC Britain’s Top Takeaways: Sumo Pan Asian in cook-off for title of UK’s best noodles

An East Yorkshire restaurant and takeaway is hoping to walk away with the title of Britain’s best noodles when it appears on a popular BBC food show this week.

Sumo Pan Asian, which has restaurants in Hessle and Beverley, will appear on Britain’s Top Takeaways, on BBC Two, on Thursday night. The show, which is casting a spotlight on the best takeout food from around the country, will pitch five top venues against one another in a winner-takes-all cook off.

And restaurant team Gary and Scott, who will represent Sumo Pan Asian, will be hoping to make it a double success for East Yorkshire after Hull takeaway Dope Burger won the title of Britain’s best burger on the show earlier this month. To do so, they will have to impress a panel of takeaway-loving families, as well as judges Sara Cox and Darren Harriott.

The show will challenge the takeaways to cook up their best noodle dish, which will then be bagged and delivered to family homes, where they will be eaten, rated and scored. Guest judges will also be making their own minds up on which takeaway takes top spot at the Manchester Village Spartans Rugby Club.

The menu at Sumo Pan Asian takes inspiration from East Asian countries including Thailand, China, Japan and South Korea. Customers will find favourites such as Asian fried chicken, Thai curry, ramen, Pad Thai and bento boxes.

As well as offering takeaways, the restaurants – which are decorated with lanterns and Sakura trees – offer table bookings as well. Posting on their social media pages, Sumo Pan Asian said they were “excited” to be taking part in the show and urged their customers to watch.

The BBC said the eighth and final episode of the series would feature “five of the nation’s top-rated takeaways” serving up “amazing noodle dishes”.

The other venues taking part are Glasgow-based Ramen Dayo, run by former DJ Paul and chef Coney; Edinburgh’s Ikigai Ramen, owned by Gabriel and Michael; Bangkok Express in Swansea, run by husband-and-wife team Chris and April; and chef Gheorghe and owner Walter of Noodlesta in Leeds.

You can watch Sumo Pan Asian on Britain’s Top Takeaways on BBC Two on Thursday, May 19, at 8pm, and on iPlayer.
